Toxic positivity.
"Just be happy"
"Good vibes only"
"Keep smiling"
"You've got this"
"You're always strong, you'll get through it"
How often do you hear this?
The problem with this is that it does not validate the feeling that isn't positive. It, with good intentions, gaslights and leaves you feeling unheard and alone, right?
What we need is to be seen and heard by others.
"I can see this is hard for you"
"Would you like advice or just to vent?"
"I understand"
"I'm here for you while you navigate these feelings"
These responses are much healthier and appropriate when someone shares their hard times.
Encouragement can come after.
"I believe in you"
"This won't feel so hard forever"
"I'm here when you're ready"
"You'll get through this"
We need to feel our heavy, big and negative feelings to move though them. Life flows, we must learn to let the good and the bad flow through us, without resistance.
Our triggers are our biggest lessons, if we never feel or analyse what the lessons are, we will never grow.
So next time you're having a difficult time, or someone confides in you. Try to encourage them on in their healing rather than tell them to keep smiling. ✌️ 🙏
